Airtight security is nonnegotiable when it comes to adopting IoT technology for mission-critical applications in all Industry 4.0 scenarios. Intelligent manufacturing, for instance, can be protected against network manipulation, attacks and data theft but only if its product line machines and devices are correctly identified and properly secured; and such security requires hardware appliances equipped with seamlessly integrated security chipsets capable of silently safeguarding communications between all devices and machines within heavily networked infrastructures.

Lanner has recently teamed up with Infineon Technologies AG and joined the Infineon Security Partner Network (ISPN) for the launch of a series of embedded computing and network platforms built with OPTIGA TPMs (Trusted Platform Modules).

The NCA-1513, armed with Infineon OPTIGA™ SLB 9655, is a desktop network appliance powered by Intel® Atom® C3558/C3338/C3308 CPU (codenamed Denverton) CPU. Critical hardware appliances with integrated security chips greatly help deter unauthorized access to production networks as device/component authenticity and data/system integrity are continuously identified, monitored and protected. The NCA-1513 and all hardware appliances equipped with OPTIGA TPMs are also capable of authenticating software updates and protecting remote access activities.

Such hardware-based security also offers not only robust protection against low-quality, counterfeit spare parts and repair tools but also cryptographic functionality such as public key cryptography and key management. While such functions could be implemented in both software and hardware, Lanner’s hardware platforms with dedicated onboard security chipsets do offer benefits and added values as Lanner’s well-established customization service does also help accelerate our customers’ time-to-market; and as a Preferred Security Partner of Infineon, Lanner can be counted on for offering hardware solutions built with the most advanced hardware-based security.

The NCA-1513 also features robust performance and Intel’s QuickAssist Technology, offering cryptographic acceleration and commercial-grade LAN functions in a 231mm x 200mm x 44mm (WxDxH) form factor. The NCA-1513 comes with secure boot and support for TPM 2.0, K-lock, 0ºC~40ºC operating temperatures, Intel® AES-NI, up to 16 GB of DDR4 2133/1866 MHz memory. For networking communications, the NCA-1513 can be configured with one of the following options:

  • 6x GbE RJ45 with 2 pairs of Gen3 bypass
  • 4x GbE RJ45 without bypass
  • 4x GbE RJ45 with 2 pairs of Gen3 bypass & 2x SFP

For expansion and wireless connectivity via 3G, Wi-Fi or LTE, the NCA-1513 delivers 1x mini-PCIe slot, 1x M.2 2280/2242 (SATA 3.0) slot and 1x M.2 3042 (USB 3.0) slot with 1x nano SIM for M.2. Other I/O includes 1x RJ45 console, 2x USB 3.0/2.0, 1x onboard EMMC (8GB) and 1x optional 2.5” HDD/SSD bay.

The feasibility, realization, and success of intelligent manufacturing, or more holistically, Industry 4.0, hinge on security as all machines and devices in a highly networked product environment must be cryptographically and securely identified, monitored and protected. Hardware-based security made possible with Lanner’s NCA-1513 and Infineon’s Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs) provides a standardized solution for efficiently implementing secure identities, delivering the needed protection without raising overall security costs.
