Telecommunication

As the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) led initiative in its adoption phase, the requirements to roll out new services to the edge in the network have coined and there are several deployments and business models for the Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) platforms. Ultimately, processing, storage, media streaming and security functions have been migrated to the edge for mobile deployments.

To achieve carrier-grade NFV required by telecom service providers, the network infrastructure requires high-availability, high-redundancy and NEBS-compliant hardware platforms as the base during the deployment process in order to host VNFs. In the mean time, hardware resources like CPU, DRAM, NIC modules and storage devices are accessible and controllable by network applications to drive the efficiency of VNFs. In other words, the telecom version of NFV is the transformation of network infrastructure that integrates virtualized network with carrier-grade hardware.

SD-WAN is one of the most widely applied SDN concepts implemented to address obstacles in conventional enterprise WAN infrastructures such as packet congestion or loss. By replacing MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) with software-defined network components, SD-WAN help enterprises simplify WAN setup for branch offices, SME setting, head office and data centers by virtualization. In short, the WAN management is shifted to the software-defined cloud. An intelligently capable SD-WAN shall support multiple connection types and network services including VPN, firewalls, WAN optimization and application delivery.

Virtual CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) is one of the fastest growing NFV applications. Through the virtualization of CPE appliance, managed service providers can save the time and cost from the complexity of handling multiple dedicated hardware-based equipment connected at the customer/branch site to provide the needed services, which often results in frequent truck roll service costs and troubleshooting remains headache. With vCPE, managed service providers can optimally assist their clients, especially SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) and branch offices, in cost efficiencies and service agility by leveraging VNF (virtualized network functions), such as routing and firewall, onto a multi-service gateway device. Managed services have thus become dynamic when network functions are software-defined, allowing more simplified and agile management.

A global leader in enterprise firewalls and a customer of Lanner was faced with the challenge of creating a firewall for the telecom market that could provide 20 Gbps IPS throughput, support up to 100 Gbps firewall throughput, be easily upgraded, and at the same time be offered at an entry-level price.

The growth of OTT (Over-the-Top) has greatly impacted the ecosystem of TV broadcasting ecosystem, due to the diversified demands of multi-screen video content consumption, wide use of mobile viewing gadgets and changes in CDN (content delivery network). Since the beginning of the digitalization era, OTT has become the mainstream service that broadcasting operators all over the world are striving to provide to their subscribers. Therefore, they realize that the success of OTT lies in the encoding, decoding and transcoding capability in order to support multi-format viewing on various devices.

Today ship managers are facing several paradigm shifts in their industry caused by major technological changes. First, the pace of digitalization in the cruise industry has evolved far more advanced than expected. Secondly, seafarers demand to stay connected to the world at all times. Thirdly, global regulations by EU and IMO also require ships to record and keep track of transmitted data and the electronic data must be updated regularly.
