Background

Electrical power consumption continues to grow at a rapid pace globally, and therefore it is essential to efficiently manage power distribution to ensure reliability and reach. The development of remote substation control and automation has become fundamental to the operation of the electricity network.

The new technologies in modern Substation Automation systems, with more monitoring, control, and protection, provides new opportunities and costs benefits when it comes to operation, maintenance, and fault analysis. Beyond power, other utilities such as oil and gas, have also taken notice and increasing their implementation of SCADA solutions to monitor processing operations.

Automation of a substation can maximize the operational capacity, prevent outages, perform preventive maintenance, advanced supervision control, and increase safety of the power network. Substation Automation systems may require specialized hardware and software, but will yield the desired results and cost savings in the long run.

Requirements

A grid solution provider sought out Lanner to jointly develop a secure and substation-hardened gateway for SCADA communication. The hardware platform needed to meet the following features:

  • Compliant to digital substation IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 standards
  • Rugged and small form factor for variety of installation environments and locations, from DIN rail mount to panel mounting.
  • Cybersecurity features onboard TPM for securing crypto-processing and tamper resistance at the hardware level.
  • Rich connectivity I/O with built-in RJ45, SFP Ethernet and Serial ports for Ethernet/serial communication, SCADA, and HMI applications.

Solution

This platform offers a secure, future-proof, and substation-hardened set of modular and scalable hardware components designed to simplify deployment, operation and maintenance of automation systems for a variety of substation applications.

Lanner’s LEC-6041 is designed to protect the communication in IT/OT domains. LEC-6041 Series is empowered by Intel Atom x7-E3950 or x5-E3930 for low power consumption and high processing performance. As a rugged firewall deployed in challenging environments, LEC-6041 comes with IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 certification, as well as 1.5 KV magnetic isolation protections for LAN port and 15KV ESD Protection for I/O ports. The system can operate in a wide range of operating temperature from -40°C to 70°C. All of the hardware designs assure that the security gateway LEC-6041 will never have downtime while operating in hazardous surroundings such as OT environment.
