Background

Modern fisheries have embarked on a new era of data and analytics-based technology to provide monitoring capability in a complex operational environment.

To ensure reliable monitoring and recording, the industry is turning to a reliance on Artificial Intelligence-based vision and Big Data analytics enabled by IoT technologies. By using electronic monitoring, video surveillance, sensors, and control systems, today’s fishing industry can achieve cost and risk reduction using intelligent systems.

Requirements

When looking for a technology partner, a leading provider of intelligent fishery monitoring systems came to Lanner for solutions. By adopting Lanner’s intelligent edge computing products as a basis for their technology platform, they were able to create an integrated onboard system of GPS, sensors, and video cameras to document fishing operations, including speed and location of fleet vessels.

Using Open Source review software resources, this monitoring system allows a full review of the aggregated database and the identification of fishing events and plotting GPS data to track fishing fleet activity for map-based review.

To meet the requirements of an integrated fisheries management system, the onboard computer component has to meet the following requirements:

  • PoE+ RJ45 network interface
  • Vibration resistance: MIL-STD-510
  • Onboard GPS – Allows review of mapped GPS data plots to track fleet activity
  • Robust fanless design that supports a wide operating temperature range in the maritime environment

Lanner Solution

The Lanner V3S is a multifunction core computing system that acts as the key component in video surveillance, recording and data analytics platform for fisheries monitoring.

It is a fanless rugged-vehicle NVR system, featuring a next-generation Intel® x86 SoC along with comprehensive I/O functionality, and is designed for environmental durability. This makes it a highly appropriate choice for fishing vessel surveillance.

The V3S I/O peripheral connections include dual COM serial ports and dual DVI-D video outputs as well as USB ports and multiple Digital I/O connectors. It also has six RJ-45 LAN ports, four with PoE, and two with PoE+. In addition, the V3S has a removable SATA storage bay that supports both HD and SSD storage options. It also supports wireless networking connectivity via two onboard mini-PCIe sockets, one full-size and one half-size with dual SIM card readers that support 3G, 4G and LTE cellular connectivity.

Lanner’s V3S is also E13-standard compliant and has MIL-STD-810G shock and vibration resistance certifications to ensure effective operation while traversing uneven surfaces. In addition, the V3S is designed to function effectively in extreme environmental conditions including temperatures between -40° and 70° Celsius, making it highly suitable for harsh maritime conditions.
