On April 3, the Intel Embedded Alliance was renamed Intel Intelligent Systems Alliance. The name reflects Intel’s collective focus on intelligent systems — a new sub-category recently identified by research firm IDC, along with Intel, Microsoft, and other industry leaders.

The intelligent systems market holds great promise for the industry. According to IDC, the market for intelligent systems will reach nearly 4 billion units by 2015, representing over $2 trillion in revenue. Roughly 1 billion intelligent systems will ship into markets such as automotive, retail, communications, healthcare, manufacturing, energy, and mil/aero. Driving this opportunity is the rapid shift from isolated, fixed-function devices to smart, cloud-connected systems.

This new breed of intelligent systems brings together everything from enterprise IT to consumer electronics in a continuum of connected, interacting devices.”
