SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) generally refers to an industrial control system that monitors and help control processes. SCADA can be used interchangeably to any semi-automated industrial system.

Today, a SCADA system is made up of 3 parts, the main computing center, a system of sensors, and a RTU (remote terminal unit) all connected through a WAN (wide area network) system.

The main computer is fed information via WAN and is involved in collating data and presenting an overview of the entire system. Each RTU is responsible for one part of the system. Some RTU have sensors attached, others mechanical functions. These RTUs are the eyes and arms of the system; they carry out tasks and report changes in the system. The RTU sometimes even have attached HMI (human machine interfaces) which allows operators to change parameters of the substation at the substation.
