Lanner Releases FW-8895, an Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2600 Family- Based Network Security System With DualProcessors and the Intel® C604 ChipsetLanner’s latest network security system FW-8895 is among the first of many dual-processor capable servers that are expected to become mainstream in 2012.

By incorporating the new Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 family, Lanner’s FW-8895 offers up to eight cores and 16 threads with a TDP of 95W per processor. There is also support for motherboards with quad-channel memory, a maximum of 128GB RAM and 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes.

At 2U and 60 cm depth, the FW-8895 is more compact than its predecessor the FW-8892, but despite its smaller size, it can be fitted with eight PCI-Express* -based Ethernet modules, making available a maximum of 64 GbE Ethernet ports. When fitted with only four Ethernet modules, it is possible to have four hot swappable 3.5” HDD bays with SATA or SAS interface. Other combinations can also be arranged through Lanner’s customization service.

When FW-8895 is fitted a future optional chipset module, it will offer support for Intel® QuickAssist Technology, making integration with embedded accelerators an easier task.

Intel® QuickAssist Technology can be used by developers to attain any one of the following goals:

  1. Decrease development time by avoiding the need to develop proprietary acceleration layers for each new design/device/ appliance
  2. Accelerate performance for demanding applications with specific hardware acceleration modules
  3. Increase business flexibility with solutions that fit changing business requirements without being tied to a particular accelerator
  4. Migrate from one technology to another with minimum impact to applications by using an Accelerator Abstraction Layer (AAL)

Depending on the SKU chosen the FW-8895 may come with the optional Cavium Nitrox CN1620 security acceleration processor. The highly scalable CN1620 is capable of delivering optimal performance ranging from 500Mbps to 2.5 Gbps for full IPsec protocol or SSL offload, 1024bit exponent RSA from 4K to 17K RSA operations per second, making it the perfect solution for applications such as integrated VPN/Firewall appliances, load balancers, WAN optimization, application delivery controller, UTM gateway and server offload.

Finally, the FW-8895 delivers uninterrupted traffic flows by way of its embedded watchdog. The watchdog monitors the system so that it can automatically trigger a reset if software hangs, the watchdog is also entrusted with the task of controlling the LAN bypass function and the power off LAN bypass function, allowing for uninterrupted traffic to flow around a single appliance even when that said appliance is offline or shut off.
