Background

Most of today’s SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) networks have replaced proprietary protocols with TCP/IP connections in order to reduce operational costs, improve interoperability and productivity, and accelerate deployment times for mission-critical infrastructures. In fact, such technological transformations have continued as owners and management of utility infrastructures demand higher degree of visibility, seamless remote management, and IT/OT convergence

Requirements

A leading supplier of power substation and distribution in South East Asia approached Lanner for a centralized, substation-oriented gateway to control their PLC, EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction), and collect data generated by sensors deployed within the SCADA. The collaboration for the optimal computing gateway defined the following requirements:

IEC 61850-3

IEC 61850-3 is the mandatory compliance for any system to be deployed in substations, which defines the criteria regarding electrostatic discharge, fast transient (burst immunity), surge immunity, radiated RF susceptibility, and other environmental criteria.

Industrial-grade x86 processor

The centralized platform is deployed to run visibility, monitoring and regulatory workload, and thus it is necessary to have an industrial-grade x86 processor to run sophisticated tasks without compromising on performances.

Expansion slot for external graphic card

For today’s substation regulatory initiatives, graphic enhancement for HMI or centralized display has received increased attention. Therefore, the optimal gateway should be designed with multiple PCI Express expansion slots for external graphic card.

High availability by RPS

Since industrial gateways are deployed to run 24/7, RPS (redundant power supply) plays a critical role to ensure high-availability.

Execute SCADA software for substation monitoring

The use of industrial grade x86 hardware device is to allow interoperability with customer SCADA regulatory software. The adoption of open architecture platform rather than traditional, proprietary systems can shorten development time and meet time-to-market requirements.

Solutions

In this collaboration, Lanner presented LEC-3340 and LEC-6041, the industrial computing gateways designed to meet SCADA environments and IT/OT convergence.

LEC-3340 is an IEC 61850-3 compliant 3U rackmount system powered by Intel® Xeon® E3-1505L V6, Core i3-7100E or i5-7442EQ CPU. The high-availability system comes with optional redundant power supplies. For installation of external graphic card, LEC-3340 provides four PCI Express slots. Regarding connections with industrial instruments, LEC-3340 is designed with isolated Serial ports (COM). Considering the ambient temperature in mission-critical infrastructures, LEC-3340 can operate under wide temperature range (-40~70°C). For deployment recommendation, LEC-3340 is optimal for the IT domain as the cyber intelligence center.

With respect to the OT domain, Lanner introduced LEC-6041, the SCADA gateway. LEC-6041 is designed in a compact Box PC and is certified with IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613. The Box PC is powered by Intel® Atom™ x7-E3950 or x5-E3930 CPU. As a network protocol in the OT domain, LEC-6041 provides five GbE LAN ports and two SFP ports. The Serial ports (RS-232) on LEC-6041 are also isolated for SCADA environment.
