Long Haul Transport
Perhaps the first commercial land based vehicle to utilize on board computers, Long Haul Transportation Companies have always been invested in Intelligent Transportation. Most trucks/tractors currently have trip recorders to monitor travel and equipment, and a CV radio for communication. While these can provide the basic building blocks of what can be called Intelligent Transportation- Lanner can take intelligent transport even further.
IVHS is an amalgamation of various systems that the Long Haul Transportation industry has used to maintain a higher standard of safety, save time and save money. The IVHS is comprised of vehicle control systems, commercial vehicle operation regulations, and traffic management/ public transportation systems.
Drivers for these trucking companies use three technologically based tools on a daily basis. The first of these is called a trip recorder, a simple computer located in the cab that can track: speed, distance, engine rpm, etc. When the driver returns to home base this data can be collected and collated for an IVHS update and to track the drivers driving pattern. The second thing that most of these drivers carry is called a logbook. Once a day the driver updates his/her hours worked, service stops made and duty status. The final thing and perhaps most well know thing that drivers use on a daily basis is a CB radio. The drivers use this system to get updated on weather conditions and traffic patterns from other drivers.
Lanner now offers a solution to trucking companies that can incorporate the Trip Recorder, the Log Book, and the CB radio all in one computer. With a Lanner on board computer you can now have wireless access along with 3G communication; ensuring that the driver can have internet access through out his weekly routine.
By allowing this, the on board computer can act as a mobile or an ‘on the go’ trip recorder. Instead of waiting until the truck gets back to the home depot, the on board computer can instantly update the necessary information for trip recorders. When the driver updates his logbook, he can do so electronically, which can be sent out instantaneously to the fleet supervisor. This can be automatically saved to a server and bundled together with previous entries; ensuring the log book is updated daily. Instead of relying on a CB radio and possible inaccurate information from other drivers, the truck driver can have updates on weather and traffic delivered right to their computer.
Finally with Lanner's new line of video network solutions, you can have everything listed above with an added video component. This means added security and even better vehicle monitoring. When the driver is sleeping or away from the vehicle there can be cameras recording around the truck and inside the cab for security purposes. While en route one video camera can even monitor the eye movements of the driver, checking if the driver needs to pull over and take a nap. All this information can also be sent remotely via wireless technology to the fleet management center.
