Intelligent Onboard Busing
An Immediate Future for Intelligent Busing.
Buses are a very effectual form of transportation. They are cheap, safe and cut down on traffic. Besides the odors sometimes associated with riding the bus, there are few downsides, except for timing. Unless you are leaving from the bus terminal, buses never come when expected- making the written timetables at every bus stop useless.
Welcome to Tomorrow, Today.
We have had the technology to make the old bus timetabling system obsolete for many years now. However there has been a lack of drive to implement intelligent transport systems due to the cost of hardware, software and wireless connectivity.
Today SFF industrial computers are inexpensive. Outfitting an entire fleet of buses and bus stops with these embedded systems are no problem. With the costs of LED displays, small monitors or screens are also inexpensive. Outfitting each bus stop with small displays is also relatively inexpensive.
By having your entire fleet of buses outfitted with industrial computers that have GPS, 3G and WiFi- enables the ability to monitor and track every bus. By attaching a WiFi, 3G or wired line to every bus stop computer you can constantly update every bus stop with the exact location of every bus. Furthermore, it allows the computer to communicate with every bus stop along the way. With GPS tracking the global position, knowing the time of day (rush hours) and the distance of every bus, the computer at each bus stop should be able to predict the time of the next arrival- giving the bus-goer up-to-date information.
